Hola!
So, today has been a long day as you can see the time I am writing this post. Although there is lots of homework, I feel I am starting to be able to converse with small phrases. It is not perfect by any means, but it is a start especially since we started this course on Monday. Today in our culture class, we discussed big events that are of great significance to them, and we each individually read about the events to the class. I read to the class about the "Quinceanera", a party for a young girl who turns the age of fifteen, which signifies a right of passage as a young woman. I had heard about these parties in the states, but I did gain more information from it, such as how the father dances with the daughter before everyone else, like in a wedding. For homework, we had to translate what the passage said from Spanish to English.
As another homework assignment to the class, we had to go on a hunt for buildings and places in Central Guadalajara. This area of town is very old, and the buildings display the kind of architecture of the era in which their construction was made. The churches were very beautiful, and enormous! We also went inside a museum which was free for students. For the first time, I saw fossils like you would seen in a American museum. These fossils were extracted from different areas of Guadalajara, which included a huge mammoth from the Ice Age. Displays also held artifacts of the ancient cultures of Mexico as well as the development of modern Mexico. One of the most beautiful areas we saw was a room full of Christian paintings depicting certain scriptures of the Bible. I loved them and took lots of pictures of them! We then traveled to a plaza where there were many shops, and vendors.
Today was another wonderful day in Guadalajara, and while it is
exhausting from all the lessons, homework, and sight seeing, it is worth
it! I rode in a taxi which I never done in my life, and it was
interesting. I also noticed with the Mexican elections coming up, how
everyone is advertising party candidates! I took a few of the people who
advertise them. In ending today's blog, I leave you with some pictures
of today's adventure. Thank you everyone, and talk to you soon!
Paula
Here is a church (iglesia en espanol) is Central Guadalajara.
The fossil of the mammoth we saw in the museum.
One of many paintings in the room depiciting Bible images in the museum.
The picture is special because this is depicting how Guadalajara came to be with the union of the missionaries and the indigenous people. Note: Guadalajara was founded in 1542.
One picture showing one of the presidential candidates in this years election in Mexico.
Here is another with another candidate in the election.
